Mail to lu-card@leidenuniv.nl and include your account name or student- or staff number.

Do you want to renew the photo on your LU-Card? After uploading the photo you don’t automatically receive another LU-Card at your registered address. In this case, please visit one of Helpdesks to collect your LU-Card. There may be a charge for this. Please bring your current LU-Card or a valid identification.

Will my photo be used for anything besides the LU-Card?

Only the LU-Card uses your passport photograph. You will be informed as soon as your photo will be used for other purposes, e.g. on the university website.  Do you want to manage the use of your photo?

  • Go to uPrefs

  • Sign in with your ULCN account information
    (Forgotten your password or not received your account details?)

  • Click on the menu under "Preferences" on "Enter / Change"

  • Set or remove the checkbox after "I agree that my passport photograph will be displayed in the address book of the University Leiden homepage"

What happens with my LU-Card after graduation?

Your students LU-Card remains valid after graduation, but has the status "alumnus". What can a graduate do with a LU-Card?

What do I do as an alumnus of Leiden University?

Are you a graduate and still in possession of your LU-Card? Your LU-Card has the status "alumnus". What can a graduate do with a LU-Card?

You are an alumnus and do not have a LU-Card?

What do I do as a contract, HOVO or à la carte student?

Contract, HOVO and à la carte students require a LU-Card to take examinations or to be a member of the Leiden University Libraries. Request a LU-Card and follow the same procedure as a student.

What do I do as a student from another university or higher education?

Students from a Dutch university or higher education are entitled to a free membership for the Leiden University Libraries. Go to the University Library.

What do I do as an employee from another university?

Employees from a Dutch university are entitled to a free membership for the Leiden University Libraries. Go to the University Library.

What do I do when I am a student and employee of Leiden University?

There are separate LU-Cards for students and staff. Request both LU-Cards separately.

What do I do as a PhD of University Leiden?

Request a LU-Card and follow the same procedure as an employee.

What do I do as a visitor or external?

Go to your contact person or a service desk of the building. If you want to make use of the services of the Leiden University Library, go to the University Library.

What do I do as a student with my paper university identitty card?

If you have a LU-Card you do not need the paper university identitty card any longer. If you do not have a LU-Card you may use your paper university identitty card as a library card for the Leiden University Libraries and as an identification for exams. Note: you need a LU-Card to access the University Library (Witte Singel) and other buildings with access control.

What do I do if my LU-Card does not provide access to a building or area?

If you can not access a building or specific area, the following is possible:

  • Your LU-Card is not activated yet. Go to one of the Helpdesks.
  • Your LU-Card does not have enough rights. For additional access rights go to the service desk of the building.
  • The access rights of your LU-Card have expired please go to the service desk of the building. 

What do I do if I want access to a parking lot?

What do I do if my LU-Card does not work?

If your LU-Card does not work, the following is possible:

  • Your LU-Card is not activated yet. Go to one of the Helpdesks.
  • Your LU-Card doest not have enough rights. For additional access rights go to the service desk of the building.
  • The access rights of your LU-Card have expired please go to the service desk of the building. 
  • Your LU-Card is faulty or there is another cause. Go to one of the Helpdesks. A fee for a replacement card may apply.

What do I do in case of loss or theft of my LU-Card?

Report a lost or stolen LU-Card at one of the Helpdesks, block your LU-Card and receive a replacement one after a payment of € 15,-. If you can produce an official police report of theft the replacement LU-Card is free.

What do I do when I find a LU-Card?

Please hand it in at one of the Helpdesks or send the card to:

What do I do when the information on my LU-Card is incorrect?

Is your passport photograph unclear on the LU-Card, for example too light or too dark? Or is your name spelled wrong? Replace your card at one of the Helpdesks

What do I have do to renew my photo on my LU-Card?

First upload an up-to-date photo. Go to one of the Helpdesks to let your current LU-Card block and to collect your new LU-Card. There may be a charge for this. Please bring your current LU-Card or a valid identification.

What do I do to protect my LU-Card?

The LU-Card can be damaged by inappropriate use. Protect your LU-Card for example in a plastic protective cover, available at the University Shop at the Plexus Student Centre.
